The Director of the Neurosurgical Clinic of Mannheim is convinced that dogs &  patients living together has a soothing effect on the patients & recommends the presence of dogs especially in radiation therapy centers & in follow-up clinic for cancer patients.
A DOG AS AN AID FOR COPING WITH LIFE

It is the opinion of most psychotherapist that dogs are ideal companions for people who suffer from certain mental illness or nervous disorders. Dr. Marcel Heimann of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York explains it like this, "For mental patients, a dog is often the anchor that keeps the patient from slipping all the way in to the disease. By taking care of a dog, a self-absorbed person can learn to place another creatures needs above his or her own wishes. A dog also provides an outlet for pent-up feelings of love in people who for some reason can no longer express this love towards other human beings."
Dogs provide an important relationship for people who are under stress, tho not sick yet, are going through some difficult times. Contact with a dog relieves negative feelings. Anxiety can be reduced by petting a dog & the physical contact can even lower blood pressure.

Each dog is trained for the perfect outcome of its individual situation.
A DOG AS AN ENHANCER OF PSYCHOLOGICAL well being
   (companion dog ; psychiatric dog)
A dog can clearly enhance the quality of life for humans. It can fill central psychological needs; for instance: dispelling loneliness & boredom, facilitating social contact, & providing opportunities to feel appreciated & understood. It also gives it's owner a positive self image, & an acceptance of self & increased confidence

COMPANION DOGS

A DOG MEANS EXERCISE
Many doctors recommend getting a dog as a long-term therapy against the lack of exercise & the medical problems arising from this lack. The simplest form of exercise , walking, can counteract the process of physical deterioration. 95 out of 100 doctors agree to a higher life expectancy from walking. Antone owning a dog has to walk regularly & half of all dog owners spend 10-20 hours a week walking their dog which keeps you much healthier.
Regular walks like this can also be used in rehabilitation situations. Erik Friedman, (an american university professor) studied patients who had suffered heart attacks & found that the rate of survival was 4 times greater for owners of a pet. She came to the conclusion not only that the increased physical activity provided by a dog has a life-prolonging effect, but also that a dogs companionship & need for care are of direct physiological benefit.
